Melonie Bayl-Smith is the Sydney Director of Liquid Architecture.

She graduated from the University of Newcastle with a B.Architecture (Honours) in 1997. After working in several small practices, Melonie established Liquid Architecture as a full time-venture with Stephen Gray in 2002.

Since graduation, Melonie has been involved in the broader aspects of the architectural profession and is recognised as an energetic and engaging leader, readily moving between the roles of practitioner, educator, mentor, speaker, writer and critic.

Architectural education is a key interest and since 2007 Melonie has been teaching and lecturing in both the undergraduate and Masters programs at the UTS School of Architecture. Melonie has also taught and lectured at Newcastle and Sydney Universities, and has been Guest Critic at the Universities of Sydney, Michigan (USA), Cambridge (UK), Bath (UK) and ETH Zurich.

For her research project “BuildAbility: The Future of Construction Education”, Melonie received a 2009 Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship and the NAWIC 2010 International Women’s Day scholarship.

On the basis of this project, Melonie was invited to speak at Archivision2010 on Embedded Practice models and has since presented at FLUX2011 – Australia New Zealand Student Architecture Congress, Pecha Kucha Sydney, Australian Institute of Architects NSW Country Division Conference, and other professional seminars and events.

During 2011, she sat on the jury panels for The Parker Fellowship travelling scholarship, DesignBuild Best New Product Award and the NAWIC International Women’s Day Scholarship. Melonie is also a past jury member of the Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) NSW Chapter State Architecture Awards (2008).
